Adding another notch to my AFI 100 belt, I watched All About Eve tonight. A movie about a starstruck fan that connives and swindles her way into the theatre limelight.

Played by Bette Davis, Margo Channing is popular, famous and adored. Eve Harrington, played by Anne Baxter, is a nobody that is overlooked. She cons her way into the hearts of Channing and her friends, quickly aligning herself to “replace” Channing in the end.

The film touches on interesting aspects of celebrity, Hollywood and theatre. Is the aging star so easily replaced by a young, impressionable dewy-eyed fan? Not likely. In the end, Harrington’s concocted world seems to bite in her in the butt. Found out by a similarly overeager, ruthless theatre critic and columnist, in seems her plans are thrwarted. The movie closes with a shy college girl coming to her aid with seemingly similar ideas that set Harrington on the path she leads. All the while, Channing lives out her days content and happy amongst friends.

I enjoyed this AFI 100 movie a lot. Having little exposure to Bette Davie, it was a great movie to watch.

On tonight? The 49th Grammy Awards.
